Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum was an Emirati royal, politician, and founder of the United Arab Emirates. Al Maktoum served as the first vice president and second prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, and he was the ruler of Dubai. He governed Dubai for 32 years from 1958 until 1990. Sheikh Rashid played a pivotal role in transforming Dubai from a small cluster of settlements near the Dubai Creek into a modern port city and commercial hub. A commonly attributed quote to Sheikh Rashid reflects his concern that Dubai's oil, discovered in 1966 and commencing production in 1969, would be depleted within a few generations.
