YFilm Risograph

Turns any plate into a Risograph print on the GPU: up to four ink drums, halftone screens, misregistration and paper.

A Risograph prints one spot colour per drum: semi-transparent soy ink pushed through a stencil onto uncoated paper, one layer at a time, each landing slightly out of register. YFilm Risograph rebuilds that process, with real Riso inks that overprint the way ink does, so pink over blue gives the deep purple you get on paper.

The drums set to Auto share the image between them so the overprinted inks match your plate as closely as those inks allow, or drive a drum from one channel. Eleven looks set the inks, screen, misregistration and texture in one click.

  • Up to four drums, each with a real Riso ink (Fluorescent Pink, Blue, Yellow, Teal, Sunflower, Federal Blue and 22 more) or any colour you pick.
  • Automatic colour separation, or drive a drum from darkness, a CMYK plate or an R/G/B channel.
  • Halftone screens per drum: round dots, lines, square dots, stochastic grain or solid ink, each at its own angle.
  • Misregistration: a fixed shift and turn per drum plus a random one, which can boil every few frames for a flip-book feel.
  • Ink and paper: uneven ink film, drum streaks, missing specks, ink starvation, ragged dot edges, dot gain, paper colour and fibre texture.
  • Output as a print on paper or as inks only with alpha, to lay over your own background. Premultiplied CG with alpha prints only where the alpha is.
  • Nuke: Nuke 13 or later, BlinkScript. Runs on the GPU (Metal, CUDA or OpenCL) or vectorised on the CPU.
  • After Effects: AE 2022 or later on macOS 11+ (Apple Silicon and Intel). 8, 16 and 32 bpc.
  • Resolution: Cell size, shifts and grain are in pixels, so on a 4K plate double them to match the HD look.
